“The best yet’ was the consensus among the almost 2,000 real estate professionals that attended this year’s Private Property Real Estate Industry Summit (REIS), held at the world-famous Kyalami Race Track in Johannesburg. The aptly themed ‘Shifting gears and driving sustainable success’ summit presented high-level global and local experts who delivered powerful messages on exploring the future of the real estate market and the tools, strategies, and data needed to advance individual, team, and corporate goals.

  • Dr. Craig Wing, entrepreneur and CEO of WhattheForesight, spoke of how we need to think about the future differently to set us up for tomorrow. He presented insights into the need for unlearning and relearning, and the importance of shifting biases and views, regardless of experience.

The smarter you are, the more likely you are to have biases, and the more likely you are to have a problem succeeding in a future that changes very quickly.”

Wing also intriguingly introduced the concepts of black and white swans and black jellyfish in real estate and what the Game of Thrones analogy teaches us: “The thing you don’t see coming is what messes you up the most.”

  • Private Property’s REIS partner, Absa, presented its chief strategy and sustainability officer, Punki Modise. Her delivery emphasised how we need to change what we think we know about housing.

A home is not just a transaction; its a platform for dignity and
intergenerational progress.

Modise outlined how Absa is shifting the dial on equity and ownership, sustainability and green initiatives, and the bank’s commitment to expand access to affordable housing finance, design and delivery of services, and climate-aligned real estate development.

  • Simon Baker, a global leader in proptech, emphasised the need for proptech to be at the core of real estate companies and activities. With AI, he said, will come faster sales at best prices, continued relevance and greater profitability, and best matches for buyer requirements. Technology will be at the core of everything, which is why we are seeing a rise in tech-enabled agencies.
  • Dr. Miriam Altman, strategist, social activist, and economist, along with Lebohang Pheko, political economist and global strategist, engaged in a fireside chat hosted by Absa’s Zintle Oyiya. Their collective views covered the opportunities that exist to serve communities.
  • Mteto Nyati, chairman of Eskom and executive chairman of BSG, engaged in the process of Eskom’s transformation and recovery and how the choices we make may define us.
  • And who shouldn’t trust what Dr Roelof Botha, political economist, had to say? His prediction in front of the audience of the Boks winning the Argentina game on 4 Oct with a score of 28-27 was literally one point out—29-27. One of his highlights was how the real estate sector benefits from socio-political and economic cooperation.
  • Theo Mseka, CEO of Private Property, focused on the incredible inroads that Private Property has made over the past year, with its focus on igniting growth, inspiring connections, and playing a major role in shaping the future of property.  With 3 million users each month and growing, Private Property can now claim to have the most engaged audience with buyers over the past 14 months, with people spending more time on Private Property than any other property platform. He also hinted at some exciting new developments in the pipeline and deeper engagements with industry players.
